2011 PROGRAM

We will continue to with grade  to grade extension which will mean that we will move into new grade 11 next year. We envisage to enquire proper and big property that will cater for all our students thus doing away with campuses. The vista approach will take effect on the high concentration of growth in the foundation phase.

We plan to extend and to improve on our school for the blind, getting them their own centre.

Also in our plan will be to enhance our relationship with American School, Pine Point and extend it to other schools abroad.

Many other implementation for 2011 will be defined in due course.

THANYA INSTITUTE OF LEARNING

Welcome to the Thanya Institute of learning * Education beyond the obvious

Thanya institute of learning has its offices situated in Sunrise Park, in Rustenburg in the North West Province of South Africa. Thanya is an institution that caters for children from 18 months to high school level (at the moment at grade 10). We offer school education to all children irrespective of race and our high concentration of service is in the areas of Boitekong, Paardekraal, Meriting, Ramochana, Sunrise Park, Sondela and the newly developed Seraleng areas. The four campuses we have are segmented according to age groups of children.

Serving a population of a quarter million people, of which 25% of its inhabitants resides in informal settlements, 45% in the government built RDP houses while 30% reside in urban areas.

It is with pride that Thanya was the first education institution established in the Sunrise Park area in 1999.

The Team:
The couple Nyabela Michael Jethro and Johanna Thandi Pelle founded Thanya in 1999. The prefixes on their two names, Thandi and Nyabela form the name Thanya, which also has a Tswana meaning of - to wake up and be alert. They serve as the Directors of the Institution. Teachers are appointed on permanent posts to enforce all strategies of learning. The administration team oversees the registration and finances of the school. There is a parents committee that continuously serve as support structure in the smooth running of the institution.

  • Spreading our wings internationally, thus providing good platform for our children to learn and explore

Biggest Threat

  • Possibility of Thanya growing out of premises due to more influx of children.

  • Continuous changes in our education systems.

  • Mushrooming of other strong, financial strong institutions.

  • End of the world.

History
Thanya was established in 1999 by the couple Nyabela Michael Jethro and Johanna Thandi Pelle after identifying the need for an education center in the Boitekong areas. It started as a nursery school and in 2001 the first grade one learners were enrolled.

In 2002 Thanya expanded to Campus 2 after buying the business rights of the Masithandane Primary School from Mrs. Lydia Cooper. The following year campus 3 was established after responding to the high demand from the community.

Two years down the line Thanya expanded into the Rustenburg CBD and opened campus four, which is presently hosting grades 5, 6, 7 & 8. Our total roll at present is at 750 children.

In 2008 we opened a unit for the blind people based in Paardekraal with the purpose of training the blind with Braille and computer skills.

A Story Worth Sharing
To make sure that inclusive education is explored, we have opened a unit for the blind people, which is called -Campus for the Blind-. The center is available for all blind people to be trained about Braille and computer, i.e. accessing Internet. All these services are for free. We have also extended our invitation to people who are not blind and we are in the process of implementing Braille as a subject to all learners from grade six.

This is the step in the right direction for Thanya, as we have already gone on air in two radio stations, interviewed about this venture.

Former Wits University student, Manju Soni of USA, discover the existence of Thanya and linked up with Pine Point School, hence the exchange program we enjoy with this American school.

Donors
Thanya is an independent school that relies on the school fees paid by its learners to pay salaries of staff, maintain the school and provide learning resources for the school. As such it is imperative for Thanya to survive without sponsorships or donors.

Who donates?
Donations and/or sponsorships from

  • Mining Industry

  • Big corporations and charity organizations

  • Business in general

  • Individuals

  • Government/s

  • Agencies, funders all over the world

What to donate?

  • Resources that will help in making learning effective.

  • Capital that can uplift the standards and images at our campuses

  • Time and treasure to our innocent children

  • Talent and love

  • Necessary resources for the blind people to buy Braille machines and computers and relevant software, e.g. JAWS.

Our Dire Needs

  • Proper, big land to put up an institution that will cater for all the campuses and many more children on our waiting list.

  • Firm and sustainable sponsorship to enable us turn our institution into a powerhouse center.

  • Finance to maintain and improve on our existing structures.
