Thanya in 1999. The prefixes on their two names, Thandi and Nyabela form
the name Thanya, which also has a Tswana meaning of - to wake up and be
alert. They serve as the Directors of the Institution. Teachers are
appointed on permanent posts to enforce all strategies of learning. The
administration team oversees the registration and finances of the
school. There is a parents committee that continuously serve as support

History
Thanya was established in 1999 by the couple Nyabela Michael Jethro and
Johanna Thandi Pelle after identifying the need for an education center
in the Boitekong areas. It started as a nursery school and in 2001 the
first grade one learners were enrolled.
In 2002 Thanya expanded to Campus 2 after buying the business rights of
the Masithandane Primary School from Mrs. Lydia Cooper. The following
year campus 3 was established after responding to the high demand from
the community.
Two years down the line Thanya expanded into the Rustenburg CBD and
opened campus four, which is presently hosting grades 5, 6, 7 & 8. Our
total roll at present is at 750 children.
In 2008 we opened a unit for the blind people based in Paardekraal with
the purpose of training the blind with Braille and computer skills.
A Story Worth Sharing
To make sure that inclusive education is explored, we have opened a unit
for the blind people, which is called -Campus for the Blind-. The center
is available for all blind people to be trained about Braille and
computer, i.e. accessing Internet. All these services are for free. We
have also extended our invitation to people who are not blind and we are
in the process of implementing Braille as a subject to all learners from
grade six.
This is the step in the right direction for Thanya, as we have already
gone on air in two radio stations, interviewed about this venture.
Former Wits University
student, Manju Soni of USA, discover the existence of Thanya and linked
up with Pine Point School, hence the exchange program we enjoy with this
American school.
Donors
Thanya is an independent school that relies on the school fees paid by
its learners to pay salaries of staff, maintain the school and provide
learning resources for the school. As such it is imperative for Thanya
to survive without sponsorships or donors.
